How were your state-by-state US market projections made?
In late 2009 and early 2010, we tracked players at several of the largest poker sites, including PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker. At that time (before Black Friday), those two sites alone had a worldwide market share of nearly 60%.
We tracked all real money ring game players on each site every 10-15 minutes, and we did this for six months. For each player, we noted the game type and stakes they were playing (at multiple tables if applicable) as well as their location. This gave us a very detailed look at the playing habits of players from different countries and states.
Using this data, the wizards of consulting firm Academicon applied economic forecasting models to project the size of the online poker market in each state. Results were calculated for three scenarios: Each state in isolation with no cooperation, limited interstate compacts, and a federal or international framework.
